The 2016 Mazda 3 is available as either a sedan or hatchback, depending on personal preference. The sedan model is known as the Mazda 3 4-Door while the hatchback is referred to as the 5-Door. Other than body style, the two variations are very similar, with each offering the choice of 4 trim levels. Drivers can choose from the G, GX, GS or GT models.

2016 Mazda 3 Engine Review

All Mazda 3 models run on an SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine featuring DOHC and Variable Valve Timing however the GT version offers a SKYACTIV-G 184-hp, 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine. The 2.0 engine generates 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque and relies on advanced direct injection. There is the choice between a manual and automatic transmission. The SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed overdrive is the manual and gives you 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. Choosing the SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed electronically controlled automatic with its manual-shift mode boosts city fuel economy to 30 mpg. All models come with front-wheel drive.

2016 Mazda 3 Exterior Styling

The exterior of the 2016 Mazda 3 is the first thing you will notice when approaching the vehicle. It has daytime running lights, halogen headlights, and a rear window wiper. You will notice the short aerodynamic antenna mounted to the roof as well as a rear roof spoiler. The dual power side mirrors are body-colored and the dual exhaust has bright tips. These features are all found on the 5-Door model while the 4-Door model is similar, but without the dual-exhaust featuring bright tips and rear roof spoiler. The 4-Door also has an integrated rear-window antenna instead of the aerodynamic one.

2016 Mazda 3 Interior Comforts and Styling

The interior features for either body style of the 2016 Mazda 3 are identical. Any 2016 Mazda 3 review will, however, point out that the 5-Door has slightly more passenger volume and significantly more cargo space with 20.2 cubic feet compared to 12.4 in the 4-Door.

There is seating for 5 passengers, including 60/40 split and folding rear seatbacks and a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat. All models have air conditioning with a pollen filter, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, push button start, and cruise control. There is a rear window defogger, dual map lights, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and a 12-volt power outlet.

Review of Technology

A 2016 Mazda 3 review will tell you that all models come with 6 speakers, an AM/FM audio system, Bluetooth for phone and audio, an auxiliary audio jack, two USB ports, and audio controls on the steering wheel. They also include Mazda Connect with a 7-inch touch-screen, voice command, HD radio, Stitcher, Pandora, Aha, SMS text message with audio, and E911 emergency notification.

Review of Safety

The advanced dual front air bag system is mentioned in all 2016 Mazda 3 review articles with its passenger weight sensors. There are also side-impact air curtains and front side-impact airbags. The front seats reduce whiplash and other standard safety includes traction control, dynamic stability control, a rearview camera, an anti-lock brake system with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, and smart construction, such as the SKYACTIV Body Ring Structure.
